    Summer Reading Challenge

Libraries are magical places. You probably don’t need me to tell you that they are more than just a building full of books; they are also community hubs. Every year, The Reading Agency organises a summer reading challenge that encourages children to read, run through local libraries. This year, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, the challenge has a space theme!

Space Chase will take young readers on an out-of-this-world adventure with a super space family, The Rockets. The Challenge touches down in libraries across the UK this summer and features bespoke artwork from top children’s illustrator Adam Stower.

The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual event aimed at 4-11 year olds. Children are encouraged to read six books of their choice during the summer holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate for every child who completes the challenge. There is also a range of competitions open throughout the summer on the Reading Challenge website. Children can sign up for the Challenge at their local library at the start of the summer holidays – and it is completely free.

The Challenge is already underway, in England, Scotland and Wales. It helps to get over 700,000 children into libraries each year to keep up their reading skills and confidence, encouraging children aged 4 to 11 to read during the long summer holiday.

So if you’ve got any little people in your life, why not head to your local library and sign them up? Even if you’ve never set foot in the building before, this is the perfect opportunity to go and say hello to the friendly library staff! It’s a great way to introduce children to the wonder of libraries, and to encourage them to spend some time reading this summer. The great thing about the challenge is that kids can choose any books to read – so whatever their interests, all books count towards their goal.

Let me know if you sign up!
