My thoughts on… Family Plot

I’m so behind with my film posts! I thought it was such a good idea to do a post for each new film that I watched, but it’s not going to be if I can’t keep on top of them.

Family Plot is another film out of the Hitchcock box set that I found a while ago. I don’t know why I picked this one really, as I knew that almost all of the others are probably better than it, but I did pick it, and now I am going to attempt to remember enough of what I thought about it to write about it!

Synopsis

A fake psychic attempts to con one of her clients by finding her long-lost nephew in order to be paid a reward. When she and her boyfriend track down the man, they find out he is now a kidnapper.

What I Liked

  • It’s a Hitchcock film, so Family Plot is darkly funny. Barbara Harris as Blanche is particularly funny, if you have seen her as the mother in the original Freaky Friday you’ll know that she has some good comedy credentials.
  • The scene in which Bruce Dern’s character, George, is trying to control his car on a mountain road, is probably the funniest in the film. Again, mainly thanks to to Blanche, who as a passenger, just acts utterly ridiculously, legs and arms flailing everywhere and being absolutely no help to George whatsoever.
  • Family Plot is entertaining, which sometimes is all you want from a film. I don’t think it has the same level of suspense that earlier Hitchcock films have, but it’s a bit of a romp, and there aren’t many of his films that you can say that about.
  • My birthday is mentioned. Surely I am not the only one that gets a little thrill at hearing their birthday mentioned in a film?

What I Didn’t Like

  • There’s not much about the seventies that I like; fashion, music, films all included. And this is a seventies film in every sense of the word.
  • It doesn’t quite  feel like Hitchcock to me. Even though I haven’t seen a huge number of his films, I love what I have seen, and this doesn’t feel quite right.

This is a bit lacking, because it’s been so long since I watched it. I did make notes at the time (ever the organised blogger am I), but I can’t find them (ever the disorganised person am I). So my apologies for this not being the best post in the world!
