For a while I’ve been making a note of the simple things in life that make me happy. While it’s nice to have big, exciting plans from time to time, I think it’s nice to acknowledge that sometimes it is the small things that you can do every day that have the potential to lift your mood. So I thought I’d start a new series called Simple Pleasures where I share with you some of those things.
The first Simple Pleasure on my list is music, and more specifically, playing music loudly, and singing along. Now, I can’t sing at all. I am under no illusion about this at all. But this doesn’t matter. Part of the joy of this simple pleasure is singing along to something at the top of your voice and not worrying for one single moment, that someone is going to say, “Er, that sounds terrible.” You are not at an X Factor audition, nobody cares what you sound like. The simple act of opening your mouth and singing along will make you feel good. Particularly if you know all the words!
That’s why I have a Spotify playlist called ‘Sing Along’. I currently have 45 songs in there, all of which I love singing along to.
Some of them, like Greatest Love of All and All My Loving, are there because singing along to them makes me remember good times. Others, like American Pie and Superstition are simply amongst my favourite songs in the world. There are songs that I know I will never ever know all the words to, like We Didn’t Start the Fire, but that doesn’t stop me from singing along to the bits I do know!
No matter why they are there, they all have one thing in common: they make me happy! Don’t ever listen to anyone who tries to disparage your taste in music – say no to music snobs! I’m a firm believer in listening to whatever music makes you happy.
So tell me, what are you favourite songs to sing along to? Tell me about them so I can add a few more to that Spotify playlist!
